You need to have public profiles enabled to use this addon.

What happens is that a user clicks add to my friends on another users page. When user2 next logs in they are told that they have a pending friend request. They can accept or deny the request from their profile page-> manage friends. If it is accepted, then the two users become friends and have access to profile information only available to friends.
