Retina support for thumbnails

Permalink Browser Info Environment
While full size images of Touch Gallery look great on Retina displays, thumbnails currently do not support Retina resolution, hence they don't look nice on modern Apple notebooks. I don't know how much effort that would take, but i think it would certainly be a nice improvement of an already great gallery.

What do think about that?

Thank you,
Michael

Hi Michael,
i have been thinking about it actually and I have a few ideas on how to do that.

I might ask for your help though because I don't have access to a retina screen for testing. Would you be willing to test it for me?

Happy new year.

Absolutely, i'll be glad to help testing!
Great that you consider to look into it. Thumbs look so much better on Retina displays when they are optimised of it!

Happy New Year from Vienna,
Michael

Hi Nour,
glad that it's almost ready!
I'm using a 15" MacBookPro.

Sorry I got a bit delayed on this one. Anyway I managed to get my hands on a chinese tablet with retina display and it seems to be working.

I'd like to send you a copy so you can test it but not here since it's a public forum.

I am sending you a private message with the files.

Let me know if it works for you

Any progress on this? I'm using your add-on for my art website and it's critical the images look good whether thumb or full size. I'll look into the code as well. Thank you.

I was working on a solution with Okapi who was testing it on a Macbook Pro. On my android tablet with retina screen it worked but Okapi said thumbnails still looked blurry on his macbookpro.

Full-screen images usually don't have a problem as long as they're resized big enough.

We were still testing when he stopped showing interest and the testing stopped. I don't have any apple product handy to test it more. As soon as I find a solution, it will be put online.

I have a Macbook with retina, I am more than happy to help test. I'm a front end dev.

I found other forum threads concerning the legacy image helper, and noticed that the core team suggested moving it out of deprecated space. I looked into the compression issue and found the substitute you posted for it. Is it the compression setting of the legacy helper that is causing the problem?

Then again even though 5.7 is set up to create thumbnails for retina, they still look awful in file manager.

Worse case scenario, I could set your add-on to load full size images for the thumbs and then shrink the thumbnail boxes down through CSS, but that would make page load very slow.

Let me know what you think. Again, I'm happy to help as I want to use your add-on for other artist clients.

ok here's the deal.
What I did was to create thumbnail twice as big BUT:
1- Using high dpi media query those @2x thumbs are only loaded if needed
2- I compress them at a very low quality rate like 40 instead of the normal 80 so they are light.

The idea of using low quality images for retina has been used often since, when resizing to half the size, pixels "get together" and the low quality is invisible.

On my high dpi screen (only 1.6, not 2 like a macbook pro) it looked sharper and I was happy but according to okapi, it didn't work for him.

If you're willing to help test, I will send you a version and you can tell me what you see

Hello,
As I said herehttp://www.concrete5.org/marketplace/addons/touch-gallery1/support/... you didn't answer anymore after I sent you the latest version to test so I just assumed you were too busy. Thanks for offering your help again.

I haven't had a chance to send a copy to Veronikan who also offered to test it.

Anyway I will send both of you a copy in the coming days with a testing protocol to follow and we can see how it's working.

Just to let others know: this upcoming version displays thumbnails beautifully on retina screens! Still the page is quickly visually completed, even with a large amount of images. Cool!
