What formats are supported?

Permalink Browser Info Environment
Can you tell me what video formats are supported? I want to avoid flash because of the memory overhead. Does Media Library support streaming of .mov and .avi files? Will the videos start immediately, or do they have to download completely? Also, are the videos viewable on mobile devices, specifically the iPhone?

Hi there,

Sorry about the delay. Add-on developers are automatically subscribed to the "Support" section, but not to the "Questions & Discusson" section, I suppose.

Basically, if a video will play in Flash, it will play in the Media Library add-on. To my knowledge, this includes FLV, F4V and MP4 files ... but only if the MP4 is H.264 encoded. I can add MOV and AVI to the list of allowed file types, if I have a working example. I haven't had a working MOV or AVI example before, but it is quite possible that it may work.

If you do get an MOV or AVI to work with Flash, please let me know and I'll add them to the file extension list in the add-on.

Recently I updated the add-on to support HTML5 video, for devices which do not support Flash. Unfortunately Apple "spoofs" the Flash-detection script, so I can't detect it automatically. As a result, I've manually set the iPhone, iPod and iPad to receive HTML5 audio and video instead of Flash. If you use a video which is compatible with both Flash and these devices, I assume it should work for everyone.
